Wang Hanchen, former general manager and deputy party chief of state-owned Shaanxi Nonferrous Metals Holdings Group Co Ltd, has been expelled from the party and dismissed from government posts after being found to have taken bribes. Wang previously served as chairman of Shanghai Far East Titanium Equipment Co.

Corruption in China’s pharmaceutical industry has been fueling the production of crystal methamphetamine in Guangdong province, according to Jeremy Douglas, an official with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

China Corruption Blotter (February 20, 2015)

Former head of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Li Xinghua, went on trial for taking $6.54 million in bribes from companies in exchange for government subsidies. LED lighting manufacturer Dongguan Kingsun Optoelectronic Co Ltd allegedly offered Li company shares worth $1.4 million. The company’s chairman Li Xuliang has resigned after being named by the court as a bribe-giver.

China Corruption Blotter (January 30, 2015)

Shao Juntao, general manager of the No.1 branch of Guangxi Longlin-Baise Expressway Development Co Ltd, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for receiving $981,274 in bribes and offering half of them to Liao Xiaobo, vice-director of the Development and Reform Commission in Guangxi region. Shao initially received a life sentence for taking the bribes to grant highway projects, and had his sentence reduced because of his confession.

Qiu Chunlei, former deputy director of Guangzhou City Health Bureau, was tried for accepting bribes of $672,131 offered by his mistress Cao Shujun, a medical equipment supplier, in exchange for helping her win supply contracts. Qiu pleaded not guilty, claiming he was forced by investigators to admit the charges.

Yan Xiuyun, former head of oncology department at Fangshan District Liangxiang Hospital in Beijing, received kickbacks of $119,388 offered by a sales agent from Shanxi Zhendong Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, in return to prescribe the company’s drugs. Yan was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in jail.

Foshan Shengbang Medicine Co Ltd and Foshan Shengbang Medical Equipment Co Ltd have been fined $49,000 each for bribing medical officials to win supply contracts. Qi Yaofang, former head of the Foshan Food and Drug Administration, is being investigated for taking $18,000 in bribes from the two companies.

Guangzhou Research Institute of Forestry Landscape Construction Co Ltd and Guangzhou Forest Park Landscape Design Institute have been fined $3,265 and $4,080 respectively for bribing government officials in exchange for landscaping projects. Feng Jianjun, deputy general manager of the company and president of the institute, received a three-year jail term for paying bribes to seek benefits for the entities and himself.
