China Corruption Blotter (May 12, 2014)

Yang Semao, deputy chief of Wukan Village, Guangdong province, was detained for allegedly taking bribes from public projects in the village. Yang admitted via his microblog Weibo account that he took bribes of $3,263 but donated them to a local school. He has been bailed out to prepare for the upcoming election of the village’s new leadership. Hong Ruichao, another deputy village chief, has also been detained on the same charge.

China Corruption Blotter (January 17, 2014)

Han Shuming, former head of Changshou District in Chongqing Municipality, was sentenced to 14 years jail for accepting bribes worth $724,680. Han had abused his position to assist two businessmen surnamed Jiang and Li to obtain land leasing and construction contracts. Feng Binghui, a middleman who funneled bribes to Han for the two businessmen, was given a five-year jail term for taking $148,238 in bribes.
