ALI approves project on compliance, enforcement, and risk management

The American Law Institute has announced a new project entitled "Principles of the Law, Compliance, Enforcement, and Risk Management for Corporations, Nonprofits, and Other Organizations." The project aims to identify key issues and best practices in the areas of compliance and risk management as they relate to law, lawyers, and legal practice.

Geoffrey Miller, the Stuyvesant Comfort Professor of Law at NYU Law School, has been appointed Reporter of the Project. His NYU Law School bio is here.

The Associate Reporters are Professors Claire A. Hill, the James L. Krusemark Chair in Law at the University of Minnesota Law School, James Fanto, the Gerald Baylin Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, and Jennifer H. Arlen, the Norma Z. Paige Professor of Law at NYU Law School.

The target audience for the project, Prof Miller said, includes outside counsel specializing in the areas of compliance and risk management; in-house attorneys, compliance officers, and other personnel who carry out internal control responsibilities; government regulators and prosecutors; and commentators, scholars, and people involved in law reform initiatives.

The project will be divided into four parts: compliance, enforcement, risk management, and governance.

ALI's work has been influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education. It was founded in 1923 and is made up of 4,000 lawyers, judges, and top law professors. It drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law.

It operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in the District of Columbia.

In addition to serving as reporters for the ALI project, Professors Miller and Arlen co-direct NYU Law School's Program on Corporate Compliance and Enforcement.

Prof Miller is also the author of the book, The Law of Governance, Risk Management and Compliance, published in 2014 by Wolters Kluwer Law & Business.
