China Corruption Blotter (October 17, 2014)

Zhong Xiangdong, former executive deputy chief of Guangzhou’s Baiyun District, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for bribery and embezzlement. Zhong was convicted of accepting $348,300 in bribes and offering $174,252 to former Baiyun District party secretary Gu Wenyao in exchange for a promotion. Zhong also embezzled $24,427 in public funds.

The party secretary of Pingxiang city in Jiangxi province, Chen Weimin, is being investigated for violations of discipline and law. Sources alleged that Chen paid $814,265 in bribes to former Jiangxi party secretary Su Rong, and influenced the award of construction projects.

Zhang Ruhua, the former chief of the Environmental Protection Bureau in Huaian city (Jiangsu province), was convicted of accepting bribes totaling $195,423 from his subordinates and private investors, in exchange for job promotions and covering up pollution.

Businessman Gao Feng was sentenced to seven and a half years in jail for bribe-giving, loan fraud, and counterfeiting official documents. He was convicted of offering gold bars to bank executives in exchange for fraudulent loans. Gao was the legal representative of Huicheng World Mining Investment (Beijing) Co Ltd, Fengning Hengbao Mining Development Co Ltd, and Beijing Sunshine Xingsheng Commercial & Trade Co Ltd.

Private contractor Yao Huiqiong was given a 3-year jail term for bribing government officials in exchange for construction projects. Yao offered $30,000 in bribes to Yang Laimao, the jailed former head of Yanta Science and Technology Industrial Park’s management office in Shaanxi province. Yao was sentenced earlier to life in prison.

The party secretary of Lianyungang city (Jiangsu province), Li Qiang, is under  investigation for corruption. Li allegedly awarded government projects to his relatives, sources told 21st Century Business Herald.
