Former head of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Li Xinghua, went on trial for taking $6.54 million in bribes from companies in exchange for government subsidies. LED lighting manufacturer Dongguan Kingsun Optoelectronic Co Ltd allegedly offered Li company shares worth $1.4 million. Shao Juntao, general manager of the No.1 branch of Guangxi Longlin-Baise Expressway Development Co Ltd, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for receiving $981,274 in bribes and offering half of them to Liao Xiaobo, vice-director of the Development and Reform Commission in Guangxi region. Shao initially received a life sentence for taking the bribes to grant highway projects, and had his sentence reduced because of his confession.
