Brockmeyer joins Debevoise in DC

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP said Monday that Kara Novaco Brockmeyer, former chief of the SEC's Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Unit, is joining the firm’s Washington, DC office.

She'll be a partner and member of the white collar, regulatory defense, and crisis response groups.

Former SEC chair Mary Jo White is at Debevoise, along with Andrew Ceresney, former head of the SEC's enforcement division.

Brockmeyer led the SEC's FCPA unit from 2011. She annonced her departure from the agency last month.

While she led the FCPA unit, the SEC brought 72 FCPA-related enforcement actions.

Brockmeyer oversaw the SEC's first FCPA-related non-prosecution agreement in 2013 with Ralph Lauren Corporation, and its first deferred prosecution agreement with an individual (Yu Kai Yuan) in an FCPA case in 2016.

She joined the SEC in 2000 following several years in private practice.

Brockmeyer was one of the principal authors of the 2012 DOJ-SEC (pdf) Resource Guide to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Michael Blair, Debevoise’s managing partner, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Kara to Debevoise. As someone who literally wrote the book on the FCPA, Kara’s insights and experience will afford clients an unmatched perspective, further complementing our market-leading white collar practice.”
