Peter Humphrey and wife released from prison

British investigator Peter Humphrey and his American wife Yu Yingzeng have been released early from prison in China.

Humphrey and Yu were jailed in August last year for illegally obtaining and selling personal information of Chinese citizens. Humphrey appeared on China TV and admitted the charges.

He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. Yu received a two-year sentence.

Humphrey, 59, had his sentence reduced by seven months. He was moved to a Shanghai hospital for tests related to cancer. He will be deported upon release from hospital. Yu has also been freed.

The couple once owned and operated the risk consultancy firm ChinaWhys. British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline hired them in 2013 to investigate a sex video sent by a whistleblower allegedly featuring the company’s former China head Mark Reilly and his Chinese girlfriend.

Chinese police arrested Humphrey and Yu during the couple's GSK-related investigation.

Reilly was convicted in China of bribery. The court suspended his three-year prison sentence and ordered him deported.

Chinese authorities fined GSK $489 million in September last year for offering bribes to doctors and hospital officials in an attempt to boost drug sales.
