China Corruption Blotter (May 2, 2014)

Bo Liangen, former Vice Mayor of Hohhot city in Inner Mongolia region, has been charged with bribery and dereliction of duty. Bo allegedly took bribes nearly $6.4 million from several real estate companies to help them inflate land demolition costs and defraud government of land transaction fees. Bribe-givers identified by prosecutors include Inner Mongolia Wuxin Real Estate Development Co and Inner Mongolia Zichen Real Estate Development Co. http://www.chinanews.com

Liu Yongyuan, former director of the Jianye district Work Safety Bureau in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, stood trial for embezzling $24,180 in public funds. Liu was accused of claiming reimbursement from public funds for his personal items, including food, bicycle televisions and refrigerators. Liu pleaded guilty to his crime and expected a light punishment. http://njcb.xhby.net

Guangdong Higher People’s Court has reduced the jail term handed down to Li Tianfu, former deputy head of Maoming Municipal Public Security Bureau, by four years. Li was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison for embezzlement and bribery. He accepted $833,687 in bribes to seek benefits for others in job promotion and construction projects allocation, and offered $45,074 in bribes to his senior Ni Junxiong. His embezzlement conviction was quashed by court after his appeal. http://legal.people.com.cn

Zhao Qin, former director of the finance department of Jiangjin district’s transport commission in Chongqing, was sentenced to 16 years in jail for embezzling $454,700 public funds. Zhao’s husband Dai Ping was given three-year jail term for conspiring with Zhao in the embezzlement. The couple also owned unexplained assets worth $966,000. http://cqfy.chinacourt.org

Quan Xiaohui, former secretary-general of Danzhou Municipal Party Committee in Hainan province, was sentenced to life in prison for embezzling public funds and taking bribes totaling $2.5 million. Quan was found guilty of soliciting bribes from real estate developers, grabbing land to run private farms, misusing public funds for his personal trips and keeping three mistresses. http://news.xinhuanet.com

Wu Weimin, president of Cangnan TV station in Zhejiang province, has been suspended from his post and placed under discipline investigation for accepting gifts. An anonymous whistleblower released a video footage titled “a Cangnan official taking bribes” on the internet, showing Wu accepting packages from visitors to his home. Initial investigation confirmed that Wu accepted gifts offered by his subordinates, including seafood, fruits and luxury liquor Maotai. http://zjnews.zjol.com.cn
