Zagreb mayor and associates arrested for graft

The mayor of Croatia's capital and biggest city and several of his associates were arrested Sunday on suspicion of corruption and abuse of office.

Local police and prosecutors didn't identify those arrested.

Croatian media sources said Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic, pictured, and members of his administration were detained.

"After several months of a complex criminal investigation, several persons have been arrested on suspicion of illegal activities in the city of Zagreb and the Zagrebacki Holding (the city's company in charge of communal services)," the state prosecutor's office DORH said on its website.

DORH said "a number of corruption crimes are being investigated."

In March, former Croatia prime minister Ivo Sanader was convicted of stealing millions in state money while in office and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Four other defendants in the case were given prison sentences of up to three years.

Bandic has been mayor of Zagreb since 2000 and planned to seek reelection this year.

Zagreb is home to about a million of Croatia's 4.4 people.

The former Yugoslav republic joined the EU last year.
