Thai anti-graft app may (or may not) reduce bribery

Reporting corruption in Thailand just got easier with the roll out of a Thai version of a website and smartphone app.

Although a quarter of all Thais say they have to pay bribes at least once a year, the government's Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) said it only receives about 4,000 complaints a year through its telephone hotline, website and walk-in center.

But Thais now have Bribespot, created by a Lithuanian living in Germany.

It allows anyone with access to a smartphone or computer to report bribes, which are then published and mapped online. The mobile app is adapted for android and iPhone.

PACC deputy secretary general Prayong Preeyachitt said, ‘It is a good use of technology to help solve the corruption problem. But I am worried about our office getting overwhelmed by the number of claims it could generate. However the application is very useful for our job and the prime minister endorses this project.’

Some Thai's think Bribespot's impact in Thailand could be limited. Graft is tolerated, they say, because it works to reduce police fines and secure faster service at government offices.

Here's a quick clip from Bribespot's Thai website:
