China Corruption Blotter (October 18, 2013)

The former president of a traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Anhui’s Fengtai Country was sentenced to five years in prison for accepting bribes worth $14,238 from four pharmaceutical companies and a construction contractor to help them promote their drugs and to obtain construction contracts. Identified in the indictment as bribe givers were Anhui Bangjie Medical Co. Ltd, Huainan Keli Medical Equipment Sales Co. Ltd, Hefei Jiacheng Medicine Co., Ltd and Huainan Hengkang Medicine Co., Ltd. http://fanfu.people.com.cn

Former deputy governor of Anhui province, Ni Fake, has been dismissed from office and stripped of his party membership after being found guilty of moral decay and bribery. Officials have not released the details of his misconduct although whistleblowers had files reports that Ni offered favors to private investors including Ji Lichang, the chairman of Anhui Dachang Mining Group Co., Ltd who was detained for corruption in January. Ni has been transferred to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate for criminal investigation. http://www.sn.xinhuanet.com

Yang Hanzhong, former deputy secretary of the Party’s Political & Legal Affairs Committee in the Inner Mongolia region, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes worth $6.9 million from 19 people in return for favors in real estate development, project bidding, job promotion and criminal investigations. Yang also abused his power to reduce demolition costs for Hinggan League Hongdu Real Estate Development Co., Ltd, causing $8 million loss for the state. http://www.china.org.cn

Chen Jianguo, former head of Work Safety Bureau in Dongguan city (Guangdong province), received a 13-year jail term for taking $1.14 million in kickbacks and accepting a golf club membership card worth $65,343 from an unqualified training institution -- Guangdong Gao Pei Occupational Institute -- to grant it work safety training projects. Deputy bureau head Shen Shanzhi and supervision detachment head Gao Jingrong were both jailed with Chen. http://www.jcrb.com

Former party chief of Shizhong District in Zaozhuang City (Shandong Province), Wang Gang, has been removed from office and expelled from the party for allegedly taking bribes, accepting gifts and embezzling public funds. Wang will be transferred to judicial organs for a criminal investigatin. http://www.mos.gov.cn

Huang Youli, the manager of Guangxi Baise Construction Engineering Co., Ltd, was sentenced to eight months in prison for bribery. Huang offered $31,038 in bribes to two local officials -- former president of Xilin County People’s Hospital and former director of Xilin County Public Health Bureau -- for their help in securing construction projects. http://court.gmw.cn
