China Tells Citizens: Don't Say 'Corruption'

An editorial in People's Daily urged the public to stop using the term "corruption" as a reflex explanation for society's ills. The piece said the widespread nonchalant use of the term promotes the false idea that corruption is everywhere, undermining the government's efforts to tackle the problem.
The Global Times printed an editorial in a similar vein, which claimed corruption "can never be eradicated in any country, and the key is to control it to a level which is acceptable to the people."
The editorial elicited heavy criticism for Global Times editor Hu Xijin, and was reprinted by internet portal Tencent under the mocking headline, "Must allow moderate level of corruption in China, the people should understand."
